Maxime was built by the Van Der Laan brothers of Woubrugge, Holland in May 1931.
The Luxe Motor barge type rapidly supplanted the older aak and tjalk hull styles in the 1920’s and 30’s offering straighter sides and a wider beam that contributed to a greater cargo carrying capacity. In addition, the ‘duck tail’ transom, prop and rudder arrangement were better suited to diesel propulsion than the sailing hulls of the older barge types.

Maxime retains her original aft accommodation where the owner’s family would have lived. Her decks and coamings were raised during her working life to further increase her cargo capacity.

With her dark tarpaulins and wooden wheelhouse she remains a fine example of one of the most successful barge types to be built in Holland.
